Pedodontics, also spelled paedodontics, is the dental specialty that deals with the care of children’s teeth. The pedodontist is extensively concerned with prevention, which includes instruction in a healthy diet, use of fluoride, and practice of oral hygiene.

The pedodontist’s routine practice deals with cavities (tooth decay) but includes influencing tooth alignment. Lengthy treatment periods may be required to correct incipient abnormalities in tooth position. Braces or other teeth-straightening devices may be used.

The pedodontist needs patience and basic knowledge of children’s behavioural patterns, as well as the effects on the mouth of physical and mental disorders.

Kid’s Dental Care Tips

One of our main goals is to help your children achieve and maintain optimal dental health by teaching topics like brushing, using fluoride-containing mouthwashes, flossing, and proper dental hygiene.

Brushing

Brush your child’s teeth daily as soon as the first tooth erupts. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your child’s teeth.

Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride-containing toothpaste when the child is old enough to control swallowing. Children are advised to brush their teeth twice a day.

We advise parents to guide their children to make sure they’re brushing properly.

With proper brushing, the plaque build-up on the inner, outer, and chewing surfaces of the teeth will be removed.

How to brush properly:

  1. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle.
  2. Place the toothbrush along the gum line.
  3. Gently brush all the surfaces of the upper and lower teeth in a circular motion.
  4. Brush the tongue as well.

Flossing

Brushing alone can’t remove plaque stuck between the teeth, where the bristles of a toothbrush can’t reach. This is where flossing comes in.

As soon as a child grows two teeth, they should be flossed. Parents should floss the child’s teeth until he or she can do it alone and guide him/her when he ‘s/she’s already old enough to do so.

Healthy Diet

Parents are encouraged to monitor their children’s food intake. To prevent food particles from sticking to teeth, children should eat sweets in moderation and brush their teeth more than 30 minutes after eating.

Regular Dental Examinations

Regular visits to the dentist are important to keep children’s teeth decay-free. They help determine if children require dental treatment later in time.

Children’s Common Dental Emergencies

We know dental emergencies can happen any time, and we are here for you. Please call our office, and we will schedule you an appointment on the same day. Please understand that it may take a few minutes to get your child in the chair.

If your child avulsed (knocked out) a permanent tooth, try to place it back into the socket as soon as you can. If you are unable to do this, place tooth in cold milk and call our office immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child visit the dentist for the first check-up?

Your child should see a paediatric dentist as soon as their first tooth erupts, or no later than his/her first birthday.

How frequently does my child need to see the paediatric dentist?

To prevent cavities and other dental problems, your child should see their dentist every six months. However, your paediatric dentist can tell you when and how frequently your child should visit based on their personal oral health.

Are temporary teeth really important to my child?

Primary teeth are essential for many reasons. They not only help children speak clearly and chew naturally; they also help in guiding permanent teeth when they are ready to erupt.
